Tyler's Restaurant & Taproom

“This restaurant and bar has an awesome atmosphere and great beer selection. The garlic fries are so good.  Definitely a nice night out with friends!” - Samantha B., Charlottesville

“Service was excellent: one of my companions didn’t initially get her pizza, but after checking in with them, they apologized, got it out to her, and even comped a beer for her for the trouble.  So great service, even when things get crazy”. – Jon L., Chapel Hill

Best 150 Beer Bars 2010, DRAFT Magazine: ” Part bar, restaurant, bottle shop, music venue and speakeasy, Tyler’s covers just about every entertaining need, and even though beer shares the spotlight, there’s no slacking on quality. On its well-devised tap selection, expect to see the latest offerings from local brewers like Foothills Gruffmeister Maibock, as well as a few must-haves from nationwide breweries. Special tappings like the recent double dry-hopped Stone Old Guardian barleywine and beer dinners push this locale into true beer-bar greatness.”

Unlike most bar/grill establishments, Southern Rail runs a SCRATCH kitchen with most items custom prepared in house. They are proud to support local farmers and purveyors whenever their foods are in season.  They feature wholesome ingredients and make a conscious effort to buy from sustainable and humane sources, including seeking out meats that are range fed and hormone free.

“Our mission is to make sure your meal not only tastes great, but also makes you feel good! We cook to order from a small kitchen located in a vintage train car.”

Milltown

milltown307 East Main St
(919) 968-2460

Milltown aspires to Belgian-style food, whatever that is besides fries with mayo (very good, BTW), with generous proportions supported by more than 100 beers, each of which was personally tested and chosen by Milltown Beermeister Brendon Biggins. Take a moment and enjoy wading through the beer menu which is pages long, each entry coming with a brief and helpful description. Adding to the Milltown experience is an outdoor patio that provides a perfect dining spot most of the year.

Hours of Operation: 11 AM – 2 AM Daily

New to Carrboro in 2010, this local chain also has restaurants in Chapel Hill and Raleigh

They use fresh jumbo wings and prepare them in true Buffalo style.  Boneless Wings are fresh white meat chicken hand battered in their special breading. As you would expect, a long list of sauce choices; this reviewer prefers the hot “Bada Bam” variety. They’ve rounded out our menu by adding our Signature Wraps, Rice Bowls, 1/2 Pound Burgers, and Salads.

“The speakers boom with “Dirt Track Date” by Southern Culture on the Skids. The walls of this shotgun café are cerulean. The line cook wears, without irony, a paper Krispy Kreme skiff. Copies of Bill Neal’s Southern Cooking and Biscuits, Spoonbread, and Sweet Potato Pie, also by the late and great Bill Neal, anchor the counter. (Matt Neal—son of Bill, the founding chef at nearby Crook’s Corner—is the co-proprietor, along with his gregarious wife, Sheila.) The Neals spice their own pastrami. They mix olive salad in-house for muffulettas. But breakfast is when they toss down the gauntlet. Biscuits, scratch-made from Lindley Mills organic flour and Maple View Farms buttermilk, are both tender and substantial. Bill Smith, the current chef at Crook’s Corner, likes his morning biscuit with pastrami and mustard, but my favorite was an Egg McMuffin riff, made with local organic eggs poached in repurposed muffin top tins and approximating, in shape but certainly not wholesomeness, the familiar McD puck.”

Jessee’s Coffee & Bar
401 East Main Street

Jessee’s opened in late 2009, offering food as well as coffee and drinks. They are roasting coffee on the premises, but that doesn’t mean the food is all coffee flavored. Great prices, excellent location, nice outdoor eating area.

They say:  ”We’re serving up fresh roasted coffee, and a fresh roasted atmosphere free of attitude and brimming with good vibes. Our family came together to create an experience that offers everything we dig: incredible coffee, great food, good spirits (those you drink) and high spirits (ours, and yours)!  Come chat over Espresso Breakfast, lunch, after work wine, beer, or an evening meal.”

Carrburritos Taquueria

Another favorite in what might be called “Cal-Mex” style,  Carrburritos consistently pleases this reviewer. As their own blurb says, ample portions and fresh ingredients, and an especially great in-house salsa selection. Reasonable prices, quick service and a nice outdoor eating area.

“Come to Carrburritos to enjoy the best in casual, fresh Mexican dining. Our portions are generous, our flavors sophisticated and our prices reasonable. Everything is made in-house everyday. We have the best burritos in town and six addictive salsas – one will surely become your favorite!”

In addition to casual indoor seating, Provence has a pleasant patio for an even more relaxed dining experience.
